I was born and raised in Boulder, Colorado and have been fascinated with working with my hands from a very
early age. My spare time was always spent building one thing or another, some of which even did what they
were intended to do. Untold hours were wiled away watching local tradesmen plying their crafts, and pestering
them with and endless series of questions, until they caved in and allowed me to try my own hand at some of
the work. This evolved to part-time work in machine and welding shops, repair facilities and even a barber shop.
(I was the shoeshine boy.) It seemed only natural that upon entering college, I should focus my studies on
mechanical engineering or some similar discipline. I, however, rather capriciously decided to major in Fine Arts.

In 1971 I was awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Colorado State University, with a specialization in
Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design. Armed with my new diploma, I opened a silversmith's shop in Boulder,
Colorado and spent the next year discovering that I didn't enjoy jewelry nearly as much as I did making things
of a more utilitarian nature. Naturally, I then took a job with the local police department. In my off hourrs, I built
and fixed things and continued to do a llimited amount of metalsmithing. After a few years of that, I took up
signpainting and did that for a decade or so, focusing mainly on custom metal letter work that few other shops
could do well. And rebuilt a couple of old cars for fun. Read more here.
